Richard T. Hewlett is a Member of Dawda, Mann, Mulcahy & Sadler, PLC.  He concentrates his practice in the areas of business and contract matters, commercial construction law, business litigation and disputes, employment and sports law.  Mr. Hewlett has extensive experience in defending and pursuing construction claims, including construction lien and bond claims, and in representing clients on a variety of contract related matters.

Mr. Hewlett's experience also includes handling significant internal investigations and in compliance matters involving the Federal Clery Act regarding safety and security on campus at higher education institutions.  Mr. Hewlett's Clery Act expertise includes auditing/reviewing compliance with the Act, U.S. Education Department program reviews, development of compliance processes, procedures and programs, and internal investigations of compliance concerns.

In Mr. Hewlett's employment litigation practice, he represents clients in wrongful discharge and employment discrimination actions.  He also has significant experience in handling business disputes and has successfully defended clients in sales commission cases and closely held shareholder and partnership disputes.  In Mr. Hewlett's sports law practice, he represents NFL and major college coaches in employment contracts, marketing contracts, book deals and other matters.  He is a certified NFL Players Association Contract Advisor and Agent.  He represents current and former NFL players.

Mr. Hewlett has also been a featured speaker at a series of campus safety conferences entitled "Clery Act Compliance: What You Need to Know."  He has presented on the issues of Clery Act and FERPA compliance at the Campus Training and Technical Assistance Institute sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women and on campus safety and security issues including the Clery Act and FERPA at the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) Security and Emergency Management Workshop.

Mr. Hewlett earned his J.D. from Michigan State University (formally known as the Detroit College of Law) in 1987, where he was a member of the Law Review and Note & Comment Editor.  He earned his B.G.S. from The University of Michigan in 1983.  Additionally, during law school, he worked full-time for General Motors Corporation in its Materials Management Group.

He is licensed to practice in all courts in the State of Michigan, before the U.S. District Court in the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.  Mr. Hewlett has been a regular speaker at the Federal Bar Association's New Lawyer Seminar on state court practice and procedure.

Mr. Hewlett's professional activities include participation in the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce-Leadership Ann Arbor Program for 2003-04.  He is a former Board Member of the Ann Arbor YMCA, Current Member of the Washtenaw Contractors Association, Past President and Former Board of Governor of the University of Michigan Club of Greater Detroit and a Former Board Member of The University of Michigan Varsity Club.  Mr. Hewlett also participates in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation-the Ann Arbor Walk to Cure and with the University of Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center.
